Why Your Business Doesn't Appear First on Google Maps
By Rockforth · 6 October 2026

It's frustrating to search for your own service and see competitors first. Google explains that local results are mainly based on three things: relevance, distance and prominence. No one can guarantee a top position, but you can improve the factors you control.
Relevance
How well your profile matches the search. Incomplete profiles, wrong categories or missing services make it harder for Google to connect you to the right searches.
Distance
How close you are to the person searching. You can't change this, but an accurate address or service area helps Google show you to nearby customers.
Prominence
How well known and trusted your business appears — influenced by reviews, activity, information across the web and your website.
Common reasons you're not showing
- Profile not verified or incomplete.
- Wrong or too-general main category.
- Few or no reviews, or reviews left unanswered.
- Few photos or outdated information.
- Inconsistent name, address or phone across the web.
