10 Product Photography Mistakes That Make a Brand Look Cheap
By Rockforth · 6 October 2026

You can have an excellent product and still lose customers because of how it looks online. These are the mistakes we see most often — and simple ways to avoid them.
The ten mistakes
- 1. Poor lighting: dark or yellow-tinted photos hide detail and true colour.
- 2. Cluttered backgrounds that pull attention away from the product.
- 3. Blurry or low-resolution images, especially when customers zoom in.
- 4. Inconsistent styling across products on the same page.
- 5. Inaccurate colours, leading to disappointed customers and returns.
- 6. Only one angle, leaving customers guessing about the back, sides or size.
- 7. No sense of scale — customers can't tell how big the product is.
- 8. Dusty, scratched or creased products that weren't prepared before shooting.
- 9. Over-editing that makes products look unreal.
- 10. Wrong formats or cropping for each platform.
How to fix them
Prepare products carefully, use controlled lighting, keep a consistent background and style, shoot several angles including a scale reference, and edit lightly for accuracy. Plan crops for every platform where the photos will appear.
